Minerals Species: STRONTIANITE Location of Mineral Deposit: Mt Pleasant Mills¸ Synder County¸ Pennsylvania Description: This aesthetic matrix specimen of the mineral strontianite (strontium carbonate). The crystals form as a spherical aggregate of well formed and very sharp pointed tapering crystals. The color is a nice 'peachy' yellow color and the crystals are lustrous. The strontianite will fluoresce a nice bright yellowish color with SHORT and LONG wave ultraviolet light (see photo). The specimen will also phosphoresce after exposure to short wave ultraviolet light for a short time. Phosphorescence is a specific type of photoluminescence related to fluorescence. Unlike fluorescence¸ a phosphorescent material does not immediately re-emit the radiation it absorbs. It releases the energy over a longer time after the light source has been removed which may vary from a second or two to sometimes hours or more. This is definitely 'interesting' stuff!
