These impurities in the NaCl cause this white halite specimen to fluoresce a bright ORANGE under shortwave ultraviolet light. It does not fluoresce under longwave ultraviolet light.

The strong orange fluorescence is most probably caused by the presence of manganese and lead, analogous to the activation mechanisms in most red fluorescing calcite. However, defects in the crystal lattice of halite are known to cause fluorescence also. Without a chemical analysis one cannot be certain about the true mechanism of this fluorescence.

Minerals Species:  HALITE xls

Location of Mineral Deposit:   SALTON SEA, IMPERIAL COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Description:  These are rare specimens of Halite (Sodium Chloride) from the Salton Sea in California. These Halites from this locality typically do not fluoresce,  but many years ago there was a hydrothermal well that blew out in the Salton Sea area. This brought up salt water from the depths that had the right impurities to cause fluorescence.  When this water evaporated it produced these rare fluorescent Halite crystals. Most of the specimens from this area tend to be weathered and poorly formed. It is very unusual to find a specimen with large defined crystals. The area where these crystals formed has been bulldozed over long ago so no more of this material can be found. This is from and old time collection. These Halite crystals that Fluoreses a Bright Orange under Short Wave are formed on tree branches as you can see a little brown decayed branch in the center of this specimen.

Minerals Species:   Halite (Salt) & Golden Yellow Selenite

Location of Mineral Deposit:   Las Salinas¸ Paracas Pisco¸ Ica Dept¸ Peru.

Description:   These specimens of Halite (Salt) & Golden Yellow Selenite are Fluorescent & Phosphorescent.  These are an interesting and unusual combination specimen of halite (salt) and Selenite. The halite forms the matrix and forms as cubic crystals that are a pale yellowish-white color and are transparent to translucent. The Selenite forms as well formed and sharp bladed crystals that are a bright yellow color and are transparent. All in all this is an attractive combination. The selenite that Fluoresces a nice light Yellow color under a Short Wave Ultraviolet Light and is also phosphorescent after exposure to short wave ultraviolet light for a few seconds . Phosphorescence is a specific type of photoluminescence related to fluorescence. Unlike fluorescence¸ a phosphorescent material does not immediately re-emit the radiation it absorbs. It releases the energy over a longer time after the light source has been removed which may vary from seconds to sometimes hours or more.
