# .......Minerals Species: AUTUNITE (Highly Fluorescent) (Uranium, Radioactive) Location of Mineral Deposit: RAT HOLE MINE, PEND OREILLE COUNTY, WASHINGTON Description: AUTUNITE (Hydrated Calcium Uranyl Phosphate) Fluoresces a Brilliant Lime Green color under Short Wave, Mid Wave and Long Wave Ultra Violet Light. Autunite is usually found in nature as massive deposits in the voids of rocks, usually Granite. Sometimes it is found as tabular crystals. It is these crystals that are so desirable to mineral collectors because they are so rare and because of the brilliant green fluorescence they display when exposed to ultra violet light. Collecting the best crystals usually involves a near full scale mining operation.
Autunite is always moist in it's natural environment. When a specimen of Autunite is removed from the earth it begins to change into meta-Autunite through dehydration. What most people call Autunite is actually Autunite that is in various stages of becoming meta-Autunite. This process can happen in a few years or many years depending on the conditions in which it is stored but one thing is sure, it will become Meta-Autunite. During this process the crystals shrink and crack because of water loss. While the addition of water will chemically change meta-Autunite back into Autunite the damage done to the crystal structure is permanent.
